Elbow Arthroscopy for Tennis Elbow

An elbow is a hinged joint formed by the joining of the upper arm bone (Humerus), the forearm bone on the thumb side (radius) and the forearm bone on the little finger side (Ulna). These three bones joint together in the elbow joint is covered with articular cartilage and the remaining surface of the joint is covered with synovial membrane. This unique anatomy of the elbow allows the joint to pass through a wide range of motion.
When the elbow joint experience tremendous stress which may result in elbow joint spur or loose fragments of bone or cartilage, the doctor may suggest an elbow arthroscopy for the patient

What is Elbow Arthroscopy?

Elbow arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat a wide range of conditions that affects the elbow joint. The following are the steps of the procedure:
  • First the surgeon gives anesthesia to the patient
  • Then the surgeon will make 2-3 small incisions near the elbow
  • Through one of the incisions the surgeon will insert an arthroscope
  • The surgeon makes the accurate diagnosis of the elbow joint with the help of the magnified images provided by the arthroscopic camera
  • After that the surgeon inserts small surgical instruments through the other incisions
  • The surgeon then introduce a sterile solution to expand the joint, in order to get a better space and view of the joint for the correction
  • Once the correction is done the surgeon closes the incisions with stitches.
